In the morning, visit one of Eger’s deservedly most popular sights, the Archbishop’s Cellar (the city below the city), climb the minaret’s tower (the northernmost minaret in the Ottoman Empire), take a fun detour to the Beatles Museum and admire the only Beatles Collection in Central and Eastern Europe, which comprises nearly 2,000 items!
If you like the band’s music, it is a great experience to take a closer look at the original press products, items of clothing, model figures, limited editions and a copies of the band’s favourite instruments.
You can then visit the Marcipania, the Marzipan Museum or choose between various walking tours of Eger. For lunch, visit the city’s trendiest wine bar, where wines from its famous Eger winery are also matured, or choose from the many renowned wineries on the outskirts of the city, where you can enjoy lunch with some wine. Some wineries are within walking distance of the city centre, others can be reached by taxi in a few minutes. As a guide, you could visit the Kőlyuki Cellar Row in Verőszala or the Losonczi Valley. If you are staying overnight in Eger, you could have dinner and taste some wine in the increasingly lovely, atmospheric Szépasszonyvölgy (Valley of the Beautiful Women) or you could also choose one of the restaurants in the city centre..
After breakfast, head to Egerszalók, where you can see the former cave dwellings and visit the famous winery in Egerszalók, making sure you leave time to taste its great wines. Have lunch at the local inn and then take an afternoon stroll through the thermal valley. Walk to the limestone tuff cascades and then recharge your batteries in the Saliris Resort thermal bath in Egerszalók or in the Cascade cave bath in Demjén, although you can also bathe in a thermal lake at one of the wineries.
It is almost obligatory after a tasting! But if you’d rather stay dry, visit the nearby 11th century church of Feldebrő, where Byzantine, i.e. Eastern, and Western Christian architecture mix uniquely in Europe. In the evening, you can bid farewell to Eger with dinner in the Szépasszonyvölgy.
