The landscape is as diverse as the folk costumes and beliefs of the people living here, streams bubble out of the caves in the Mecsek’s valleys, Swabian villages and an Orthodox Serbian monastery nestle in the bosom of the Tolna and Szekszárd hills, and from the vineyards, you can see the mist hovering over the Danube in some places and the Drava in others, and all the while there is some good red wine gleaming in your glass. The crowning jewel is the city of Pécs, where not only the episcopate treasures but also the Turkish memorials, the museums and the city’s enchanting Mediterranean atmosphere detain visitors, who can watch the world go by on the main square with a glass of Cabernet Franc, Portugieser or maybe even Cirfandli in their hands.
