1 DAY TOUR

Eger Wine District

1. day tour

Start the morning with some sightseeing in Eger. Visit the Eger Castle, the setting of the definitive reading experience for all Hungarians, the ‘Stars of Eger”, commemorating the castle’s captain István Dobó and of course the writer of the novel, Géza Gárdonyi. After visiting the castle, visit Eger Basilica.

For lunch, you can choose between various enticing restaurants and bistros in the city centre, but you can also visit the city’s trendiest wine bar, where the wines from one of Eger’s famous wineries are maturing in its cellar. In the afternoon, discover one of the city’s lesser-known attractions, the Camera Obscura in the “magic tower at the top of the Lyceum, installed by astronomer Miksa Hell in 1779 and certainly the oldest working structure in the world.

Anyone can go up and check it out (in exchange for an admission fee and quite a few flights of stairs), and it is worth doing so, as it is a special experience! Plan to visit one of the Eger wineries in the afternoon, as there are some within walking distance of the city centre, although it is also worth visiting some of the wineries on the outskirts of the city, which are all worth the detour. If you plan to spend the night in Eger, you can have dinner and enjoy some wine in the atmospheric Szépasszonyvölgy, or Valley of the Beautiful Women, although you could also choose one of the charming restaurants in the city centre.
