3 DAY TOUR

Sopron Wine District

1. day tour

Make this a day of palaces and the nobility. Visit the Esterházy Palace in Fertőd, the “Hungarian Versailles”, in the morning to marvel at the former fabulous wealth of the Esterházys.

After the palace tour, relax for a while in the spa in Balf, then visit the Balf National Memorial next to the enclosing wall of the St Wolf’s Castle Church. The ensemble of statues erected in memory of the murdered Jewish forced labourers commemorates, amongst others, poet György Sárközi and writer Antal Szerb.

In the afternoon, visit Széchenyi Palace and the Mausoleum in Nagycenk, then head to Sopron where you can end the day with dinner and wine tasting.

2. day tour

Sopron is an unmissable part of any tour of the wine district, so spend the morning discovering the city centre, the iconic Fire Tower building, the Baroque statue of the Holy Trinity, the Storno House, the medieval synagogue and the Castle District.

Enjoy lunch in the hotel restaurant of the Carmelite Monastery in Sopronbánfalva, then in the afternoon, visit the Forestry Museum, the Mining Museum or the Lővér Adventure Park. Don’t forget to visit the city’s iconic chocolate workshop for a quick tasting and some souvenir shopping before enjoying an evening’s wine tasting.

3. day tour

Start the morning with a sailing trip or a rowing tour on Lake Fertő, weather permitting, or a long bike ride on the cycle path around the lake. Have lunch in Fertőrákos, then visit the Fertőrákos Quarry and Cave Theatre, and, if you have time, the famous Mithras Shrine.

You can also visit the Episcopal Palace by bike and even a small electric train, while local winemakers also organise vineyard tours by tractor or tractor-drawn trailer, so you can sit comfortably while admiring the view of the lake and the huge reeds. Spend the evening in Fertőrákos with a wine tasting accompanied by cold cuts, maybe a wine dinner or, if you are here at the right time of year, a concert in the Fertőrákos Quarry.
