Wine festivals across the country in October

If there is a challenging and energy-sapping month of the year, September is certainly it. Back to work from the summer holidays, with the challenges of starting school, there's not much time to recharge and no time to think about travelling to the countryside. In October, however, there's nothing to stop us from getting out again, celebrating the ripening grapes with wine growers, attending wine festivals across the country...

Red Wine Festival of Villány – 6-8 October

Our most famous wine district, Villány offers an unmissable programme for October. From 6-8 October, the Red Wine Festival will provide all the entertainment you need: musical performances, traditional folk performances, the classic harvest parade and gastronomic events will take place in Villány. All we have to do is choose the right wine for the Cooking Competition on Diófás Square, the simultaneous chess match with master chess player József Jeszenszky or the fireworks on Saturday evening. Wine Day of Pannonhalma – 7 October

For many, Pannonhalma is a wine district to be discovered, and one that is deservedly attracting increasing interest among wine lovers. So why not combine the discovery of Pannonhalma wines with a musical programme and a street party, on the first Saturday of October? The most important wineries of the wine district will be welcoming festival visitors on the Main Square from 14.00, and even the guest wineries of the Neszmély Wine District will be here to represent the colourful wine traditions of the Upper Pannon Wine Region. Őszi Etyeki Piknik – 14-15 October

If it is autumn, then it is the time of Etyeki Őszi Piknik (Etyek Autumn Picnic), in the wine district closest to the capital. Formerly known as the “vineyard of Budapest”, this district needs no introduction, the Gastro Promenade on Öreghegy Wine has hosted so many exciting wine and food events over the past decades that we can picture visitors walking along the cellar-lined, cobblestone promenade with wine glasses in hand. So let's plan this weekend to be part of the musical fun (again). Visit the website of the programme

Egri Bikavér Wine & Gastronomy Days – 18-28 October

Bikavér (aka Bull’s Blood) is one of our best-known wines, and not only to foreigners, as there is hardly a Hungarian who does not know this red blend and the legend associated with it. But do you know which grape variety it is based on and what are its three categories? If you haven't already memorised the most important facts about this Hungarikum, it's worth checking out our guide to Egri Bikavér before the festival so that you can confidently start a conversation with the representatives of the wineries attending the event... JuhfarkFest – 21 October

And another wine festival built around one of our typical Hungarian wines! The Juhfark is the iconic grape of Somló, which will be presented by no less than 14 wineries in a walking tasting on Saturday 21 October. Hosted by the Tornai Winery and winemakers from all sides and all the villages of the Somló Hill (an extinct volcano), they will bring a wide variety of volcanic wines to showcase the amazing spectrum of the wine styles that the careful winemakers of the Somló Wine District produce from Juhfark. Tickets are limited, so hurry! Visit the website of the programme
