The legal predecessor of the Institute, the Badacsony Viticulture and Enology Experimental Vineyards was established in 1951. The institution developed into a Research Station until 1972 and achieved significant success in the field of research and consulting. After several reorganisations, from January 1, 2014 it was returned to the research network of the Ministry of Agriculture under its new name: National Agricultural Research and Innovation Centre / Viticulture and Enology Research Institute, Badacsony Research Station. Nowadays, the task of the Research Institute is viticulture and oenological research and consulting, mainly in the Balaton Wine Region, based on the 18 ha of vineyards, the cellar and the accredited laboratory (soil, plant, wine). Among the main tasks of the Institute are the field of testing environmentally friendly viticulture methods. The results of the breeding activity are marked by a number of Olaszrizling, Szürkebarát, and Rajnai Rizling (Riesling) clones, as well as some new grape varieties, namely: Zeus, Zefir, Zervin, Vulcanus and Rózsakő.
