The Bátaapáti project was born in the early 1990s when Hungary opened its borders to foreign investment. The great history and potential of these lands have always fascinated Italians, and thus, under the sponsorship of Peter Zwack (fifth generation of the well-known Hungarian distillers), Piero Antinori and Jacopo Mazzei began looking for the most promising vineyard to create quality Hungarian wines. Their search, which included careful analyses of meteorological and soil data, ended in 1991 with the purchase of Bátaapáti, a centuries old, wine producing estate located to the southeast of Lake Balaton in the Völgység district of the Tolna wine region. They were impressed with the quality wines being produced in the region and by the historical importance of viticulture to the area as evidenced by the estate’s existing vineyards and ancient underground cellars.
